NHRA officials announced today that zMAX Dragway has been added to the 2011 NHRA Southeast Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series schedule to host a round of competition during the weekend of Aug. 26-28. The event will run in conjunction with the popular North Carolina track’s Food Lion AutoFair event, billed as the world’s largest automotive extravaganza.

The race at Bruton Smith’s Bellagio of drag strips will be the fifth of six races in 2011 for the NHRA’s Southeast Division, which kicks off the season this weekend in west Florida at Bradenton Motorsports Park (Feb. 11-13).

“We are excited to host a round of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at the spectacular zMAX Dragway,” said NHRA Southeast Division Director Rich Schaefer. “Combined with the track’s popular AutoFair event, the Lucas Oil Series race should offer all hot rodding enthusiasts an unforgettable weekend.”

“We realize the importance of our local racers for the support and success of all events at zMAX Dragway,” said Christian Byrd, general manager of zMAX Dragway. “Hopefully this will provide racers from North and South Carolina a chance to race closer to home and collect points for the September O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals here in Charlotte.

“This event also has great potential to expose the sport of NHRA drag racing to the thousands of auto enthusiasts that will be on property throughout the weekend for the Food Lion AutoFair. Thanks to the NHRA, the world’s largest automotive extravaganza just got a lot bigger!”

NHRA Lucas Oil Series drivers compete in seven categories for valuable points leading to divisional and national championships and a share of the $561,000 purse.  Headlined by the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car classes, the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series also includes Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street, Top Sportsman, and Top Dragster.
