NEXTEL Cup's "Most Competitive" Track
Managing Editor Kimberly McGraw used statistics from the 2005 season to rank the 22 tracks that feature America's most popular auto racing series.
"Rather than dive into the bottomless pool of opinions, we looked at basic statistics to determine NEXTEL Cup's most competitive race track," McGraw wrote. "Specifically, we compared race statistics from the 2005 season, including the margin of victory, number of lead changes, and number of lap leaders. We also looked at the difference in qualifying speed between the fastest and slowest qualifier to se how close in speed the cars were."
For tracks with two NEXTEL Cup races in 2005, including Charlotte Motor Speedway, McGraw averaged the statistics. Her numbers showed Charlotte Motor Speedway led the series with 19 lap leaders, ranked second in number of lead changes with 36 and had the third closest margin of victory at 0.168 seconds.
The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series returns to Charlotte Motor Speedway Saturday night, Oct. 14, for the Bank of America 500. The traditional October classic is round five of the 10-race Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and seats start at just $19.
