"RaceDay" Crew to Battle in School Buses
Members of SPEED Channel's "NASCAR RaceDay" crew, including Jimmy Spencer, John Roberts, Wendy Venturini and Rutledge Wood, are among those scheduled to wheel the behemoth creations in a winner-take-all slobberknocker that is sure to leave metal mangled and hearts broken.
On paper, Spencer appears to have a considerable advantage on his television colleagues. In addition to the two NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series victories that highlight his résumé, the Berwick, Pa., native claimed the World School Bus Racing Championship at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2000.
"Watching Jimmy Spencer race a School Bus is like watching a bull charge through a china shop," said H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway. "It's pretty spectacular—unless you own the china shop!"
Prior to banging bumpers on the race track, the "NASCAR RaceDay" personalities will sign autographs on the grandstand concourse beginning at 6:15 p.m.
A full slate of Legends Car, Bandolero and Thunder Roadster racing is also on tap and championships will be decided in each of the seven divisions. The Summer Shootout pit area will be filled with more than 200 race cars and competitors ranging from third graders to Social Security recipients will be in action.
Adult admission is just $5 while children 6-12 are admitted for $3 and kids under 6 are free. Tickets are available in advance at the speedway ticket office and at Gates 4 and 5 the night of the event. Parking is free.
Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with preliminary action at 5:30 p.m. Feature racing begins at 7:30 p.m. and is scheduled to conclude by 10:30. For information, call the speedway ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS or here.
