Rivers and Diamonds to Sparkle Under the Lights
To serve more than 250,000 race fans during the month of October, Charlotte Motor Speedway uses more than 920,000-kilowatt hours of electricity, enough to keep 112 meters turning laps continuously on 2,000 acres of speedway property. (Note: One kilowatt hour equals the amount of energy needed to power 10 100-watt light bulbs for one hour.)
The average household in the Charlotte region uses 13,839 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. At that rate, the speedway's October usage could power a household of race fans for nearly a lifetime-more than 66 years.
Or one could power a typical microwave oven continuously for 105 years, watch a color television non-stop for 350 years or light a 100-watt bulb for 1,050 years.
Wondering about the October electric bill? Let's just say it's enough to buy 29,666 hot dogs during the Bank of America 500!
Melissa Rivers Joins the Fun
Popular television personality Melissa Rivers will attend her first NASCAR race at the Bank of America 500. Known best for bringing a comic flair to Hollywood red carpet interviews, Rivers will appear on stage during pre-race ceremonies and join speedway officials during driver introductions at the start-finish line.
The New York native is the host of event programming on The TV Guide Channel. Rivers also spent more than a decade working in front of the camera for the E! network, "CBS This Morning" and MTV. Dazzling Diamonds
In addition to a magnesium trophy and a check for approximately $200,000, the winner of Saturday night's race will receive a Bank of America 500 diamond ring courtesy of Diamonds Direct Southpark and Charlotte Motor Speedway. Cast in 18 karat white gold, the ring includes 51 diamonds collectively totaling .70 carats of G color and SI clarity and is valued at $8,000.
Laps in Luxury
Charlotte Motor Speedway has recently completed a $2.5-million renovation of its clubhouse seating, banquet and bar areas in The Speedway Club. Designed to offer the ultimate frontstretch experience for individual ticket buyers or Speedway Club members, the renovated clubhouse features 2,986 new 22-inch-wide cushioned seats; 17 flat-screen high-definition televisions; and 3,600 square yards of new carpet.
More than 50 gallons of red, green, blue and yellow paint were used to modernize the look of the climate-controlled, indoor-seating area, and the hallways were widened in the bar and restroom areas to better accommodate pedestrian traffic.
Wide-screen televisions were also added at the bars and in the restrooms so fans won't miss a lap of the on-track action.
Tickets Still Available
Tickets are still available for all Bank of America 500 Week events and can be purchased in advance by calling the Charlotte Motor Speedway ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS. Tickets will also be for sale at numerous entry gates on event days.
