10-Year-Old Dillon Bassett Eyes Three in a Row
Dillon Bassett, of Winston-Salem, N.C., will attempt to remain unbeaten Tuesday night when Lowe's Motor Speedway hosts round three of the 10-race Summer Shootout Series.
In just his second season of Summer Shootout competition, Bassett is quickly turning the Fisher-Price Bandolero Bandits division into his personal playground.
The 10-year-old racer actually crossed the finish line second on opening night, but inherited the victory when the apparent winner's car failed post-race inspection. During round two, Bassett took the lead on the second lap and never looked back in the 20-lap race.
A strong finish Tuesday night would be a major step toward solidifying Bassett's hopes for a Summer Shootout championship as the point standings will be shuffled after seven races based on bonus points awarded for each feature victory.
More than 200 cars jam the Summer Shootout pit area each week as three classes of Bandoleros, four divisions of Legends Cars and the Thunder Roadsters battle on the frontstretch quarter-mile oval. The series runs each Tuesday night through Aug. 7 with a special Wednesday night event on July 4.
In addition to the eight regular divisions, the wild-and-wacky CRASHCars, a division that is redefining entry level stock car racing, will also be in action.
Summer Shootout admission is just $7 for adults. Children 6-12 are admitted for $3 and kids under 6 are free. Tickets are available in advance at the speedway ticket office and at Gates 4 and 5 the night of the event.
Parking is free. Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with preliminary action at 5:30 p.m. Feature racing begins at 7:30 p.m. For information, call the speedway ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS or visit www.charlottemotorspeedway.com.
