Former Drag Racer Randy Moore and War Wizard at Circle K Monster Truck Bash
Monster Truck fans with a need for speed will be cheering for War Wizard Saturday night, Aug. 16, when the world's fastest Monster Truck makes its first visit to The Dirt Track @ Charlotte Motor Speedway during the ninth annual Circle K Monster Truck Bash.
Former drag racer Randy Moore will be behind the wheel of War Wizard which features a unique body adapted from an International Hot Rod Association Pro-Modified drag racing car.
War Wizard will join Avenger, Equalizer, Raminator, Samson, Tailgator, Brutus and War Wagon for an evening of car-crushing destruction during the Circle K Monster Truck Bash. War Wizard, however, brings something to the region's only major outdoor Monster Truck event that the other gargantuan machines don't have-record speed.
In 2005, War Wizard became the world's fastest Monster Truck when Moore roared down a concrete runway during the East Coast 4-Wheel-Drive Association's annual meet in Maxton, N.C.
Representatives from Guinness World Records were on hand to certify the record when War Wizard hit a top speed of 84.382 mph, shattering the previous mark of 69.3 mph set in 1999 by Bigfoot No. 14.
"When I was in drag racing we had the world's fastest Pro-Modified car for 18 months," Moore said. "I thought it would be distinctive to have that record in the Monster Trucks as well."
Moore and his War Wizard Racing team are still waiting for someone to challenge their speed record.
"We could have easily broken 100 mph that day in Maxton, but we ran out of daylight," Moore said. "I would love to go back and top 100 if we get a challenger."
The owner and driver of War Wizard has another tie to racing beyond his former straight-line career. Moore's father, Carl Moore, was one of the founders of Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee.
"I kind of grew up around racing," Moore said. "I actually wound up drag racing in the IHRA Pro-Modified series for several years before I was approached about seven years ago by Monster Jam about starting a Monster Truck team.
"I've been hands on with the name and the body of the truck since the beginning," said Moore, who has applied his drag racing roots not only to the record speed of War Wizard but to the unique design of the truck as well.
Monster Truck racing has become a passion for the Bristol, Tenn., resident who has even grown accustomed to the radical freestyle competition.
"Being a drag racer, I was big into the racing part when I first became involved in Monster Truck racing," Moore explained. "But now, I really enjoy the freestyle competition."
Moore has more than one reason why he is anxiously anticipating War Wizard's first visit to the Aug. 16 Circle K Monster Truck Bash. In addition to thrilling thousands of fans, Moore will have the opportunity to tour zMAX Dragway @ Concord, the new state-of-the-art drag racing facility which will debut Sept. 11-14 with the inaugural NHRA Nationals.
"If the offer was right, I would go back to drag racing but I wouldn't stop Monster Truck racing. We've worked really hard on the truck and the brand name," said Moore. "As I get older, I may put someone else in the seat of War Wizard but, for now, I'm not stopping."
The Circle K Monster Truck Bash begins with the Circle K Pre-Race Pit Party where fans can meet the Monster Truck drivers, have their pictures taken with the gargantuan trucks and obtain autographs. Ticket holders can gain early entry to the Pit Party by purchasing a bottle or can of Vault at any Circle K store and presenting the empty bottle or can at the gate.
Early entry for the Pit Party starts at 4 p.m. and spectator gates open at 5. The Circle K Pre-Race Pit Party concludes at 6:30 p.m. with on-track activities starting at 7:30.
If purchased in advance, reserved seats for the Aug. 16 Circle K Monster Truck Bash are $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.
Adult seats are $5 more the day of the event. Parking for all events at The Dirt Track is free.
