Time to Turn Up the Heat in Summer Shootout Championship Chases
Championship battles will begin to bloom tonight when Metrolina Greenhouses presents round six of the 10-race Quaker Steak & Lube Summer Shootout Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The closest points battle among the eight divisions is in the Vault Legends Car Young Lions where Devin Jones, of Mooresville, N.C., holds a slim four-point advantage over Bryce Walker, of Weatherford, Texas.
Consistency has been the key for Jones who has yet to visit victory lane, but has finished in the top five during each of the five weeks.
In the Coke Classic Legends Car Masters division, two-time feature winner John Sossoman, of Concord, N.C., is 17 points ahead of defending series champion Clay Hair, of Mt. Pleasant, N.C. Another close battle is in the Coke Zero Legends Car Semi-Pro division where Cody Blackburn, of Stanley, N.C., has a 15-point lead over Austin Hill, of Winston, Ga.
Other points leaders at the half-way mark of the season are: Steven Ross, of Stanfield, N.C., in the Pull-A-Part Legends Car Pro division; Adam Gay, of Dubline, Ga., in the Full Throttle Thunder Cars; Chris Morgan, of Kannapolis, N.C., in the Cherry Coke Bandolero Outlaws; T.J. Michael, of Plano, Texas, in the POWERade Bandolero Bandits; and Chad Finchum, of Knoxville, Tenn., in the Sprite Bandolero Young Guns.
The Quaker Steak & Lube Summer Shootout, which runs each Tuesday night through Aug. 12, includes four divisions of Legends Cars, three classes of Bandoleros and the Thunder Cars. The Legends Cars and Bandoleros race on the frontstretch quarter-mile oval while the Thunder Cars battle on the 1.5-mile superspeedway.
Quaker Steak & Lube Summer Shootout admission is just $7 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12. Kids under 6 are admitted free. Tickets are available in advance at the speedway ticket office and at Gates 4 and 5 the night of the event. Parking is free.
Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with preliminary action at 5:15 p.m.
