Fantastic finishes were in full bloom Tuesday as Metrolina Greenhouses presented round six of the Quaker Steak & Lube Summer Shootout Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Adam Gay and Dillon Bassett thrilled the crowd with drama at the checkers in their respective features while eight other winners continued their march toward summer championships.
In another wild Full Throttle Thunder Car race, Gay displayed his mastery of the legendary 1.5-mile superspeedway, winning for the third time in the past four features.
After falling behind the three Van Wingerden entries by 10 car-lengths early in the race, Gay led a four-car freight train that caught and passed the lead pack on lap seven of the 10-lap feature. But on the white flag lap, Tommy Pistone and Thomas Van Wingerden overtook Gay on the backstretch to set up a four-car battle for the win.
Pistone led the field out of Turn 4 and as Van Wingerden went to the high side, Gay, with a push from Taylor Hull, dove to the inside and around the top two cars for a stunning victory. Hull followed in second, with Pistone edging Van Wingerden for third.
Coming out of Turn 4 with the checkered flag in sight, Mason Massey probably thought he was driving toward his first POWERade Bandolero Bandits victory. But an aggressive last-second pass by Dillon Bassett proved him
Bassett's bumper connected with the rear of Massey's car less than 20 yards from the finish, sending Massey on a sideways slide down the straightaway. Bassett, of Winston-Salem, N.C., dove inside and to the front at the stripe to capture his fourth victory of the season.
Massey held on for a disappointing second with Brian Kolb close behind in third in the feature that was shortened to 15 laps due to time constraints.
After multiple cautions, a stalled pace car and a fire, Dylan Presnell, 13, took the checkered flag in the eventful Vault Legends Car Young Lions feature.
The Sevierville, Tenn., native started the race on the outside of the front row but quickly took the top spot on lap three when he dove inside Austin Leitnes in Turn 4. Presnell led the rest of the race which was shortened to just seven laps due to time constraints. The victory was
Presnell's first of the season and the second of his career.
Scott Hensley, of Olive Branch, Miss., finished second with Dylan Sawyer, of Mooresville, N.C., taking third in the division for drivers ages 12 to 16 with limited Legends Car experience.
In a caution-filled feature for the Coke Classic Legends Car Masters division, defending series champion Clay Hair captured his fourth straight victory. The Concord, N.C., racer used a bump-and-run maneuver in Turn 1 to take the lead from Will Cagle on lap two, then held off longtime rival Johnny Sossoman in the division for drivers ages 40 and over. Cagle settled for third in a race that was shortened to 15 laps due to time constraints.
Other feature winners were: Thomas Van Wingerden, of Huntersville, N.C., for the third time in the Full Throttle Thunder Cars division make-up race from last week; Chad Finchum, of Knoxville, Tenn., in a photo-finish for his fourth win in the Sprite Bandolero Young Guns division make-up race; Kason Plott, of Marietta, Ga., in the POWERade Bandolero Bandits division make-up race; Rusty Drye, of Rockwell, N.C., in the Vigilante entry for the CRASHCar division; Kendall Sellers, of Kannapolis, N.C., in the Cherry Coke Bandolero Outlaws division; Casey Roderick, of Lawrenceville, Ga., in the Pull-A-Part Legends Car Pro division; Chad Finchum, of Knoxville, Tenn., for the fifth time in the Sprite Bandolero Young Guns division; Cody Blackburn, of Stanley, N.C., in the Coke Zero Legends Car Semi-Pro division.
The racing action will continue to "pop" Tuesday night, July 22, as Vault presents round seven of the 10-race Quaker Steak & Lube Summer Shootout Series. In addition to a full slate of Legends Car, Bandolero and Thunder Car racing, the wild and crazy CRASHCars will be back for another fender-banging battle.
Adult tickets are just $7 with children ages 6 to 12 admitted for $3 and kids under 6 are free. Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with racing at 7:30. For information, call the Charlotte Motor Speedway ticket office or at 1-800-455-FANS or visit
