A vicious winter storm struck North Carolina Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, covering Lowe¿s Motor Speedway and the surrounding area in a blanket of ice.

Described by Duke Power officials as the worst ice storm in state history, as many as 1.5 million North Carolina residents were without power. In Charlotte alone, more than 60 roads were closed because of fallen trees or power lines, including parts of Interstate 85.

Power remained on at the speedway throughout the storm and by mid-day roads near the track had thawed.
