Stock is Key Word for New Road Hawg Division
¿The idea of rescuing a car from a junkyard, making a few safety modifications and racing it at a local short track has virtually disappeared,¿ said H.A. ¿Humpy¿ Wheeler, president and general manager of Lowe¿s Motor Speedway. ¿That concept is the very foundation upon which major league stock car racing was built. The Road Hawgs allow us to maintain a low-cost entry point into the sport while providing fans with what we believe will be one of the most entertaining divisions in short-track racing.¿
To ensure cost containment, the Road Hawg division, which is open to front- or rear-wheel-drive domestic or import vehicles with six- or eight-cylinder engines, features a $750 claim rule. There is a 100-inch minimum wheelbase and no sports cars, all-wheel-drives or sport utility vehicles are permitted. The car must remain stock with only safety modifications, such as the addition of a roll cage, fuel cell and racing seat, allowed.
Cars must be brightly painted and each must have a name or theme, such as Green Hornet, Rocket Racer or Soccer Momma, painted across the door. It is recommended that the horn be in working condition and the AM/FM radio must be operational.
Lowe¿s Motor Speedway will have the right to claim any vehicle for $750, less the fire extinguisher, fuel cell, seat, seat belts and window net. Refusing the claim will result in forfeiture of points and prize money along with a one-year suspension from competition.
The Road Hawgs are scheduled to debut during the May 28-29 Southern Showdown Championship on the four-tenths-mile clay oval at The Dirt Track @ Lowe¿s Motor Speedway. The division will also support other races at The Dirt Track and will compete in selected events during the Hardee¿s Summer Shootout on the paved frontstretch quarter-mile oval at Lowe¿s Motor Speedway.
