Brent Sherman led the speed parade Wednesday night at Lowe¿s Motor Speedway as 24 ARCA RE/MAX Series teams made final preparations for the Quaker Steak & Lube 100 on Thursday evening, May 27.

Driving the No. 44 Serta Mattress/Hickory Farms Ford, Sherman recorded a best lap of 176.702 mph around the 1.5-mile superspeedway. The 29-year-old North Barrington, Ill., native is in his second full season of ARCA competition and is still searching for his first victory.

Reed Sorenson, a former Hardee¿s Summer Shootout Legends Car champion at Lowe¿s Motor Speedway and now a regular on the ASA circuit, was second fastest on the unofficial stopwatches at 176.528 mph. The 18-year-old from Peachtree City, Ga., drove the No. 41 Ganassi Racing Dodge with NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver Casey Mears on hand offering advice. Veteran crew chief and team manager Andy Graves was overseeing the operation.

Ryan Hemphill, driving the No. 64 Braun Motorsports Dodge, was third fastest at 175.496 mph with A.J. Henriksen fourth on the speed chart at 174.984 mph in the No. 17 Chevrolet. David Ragan, son of former NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver Ken Ragan, completed the top five at 173.969 mph in the No. 88 Chevrolet.

Only two incidents slowed the five-hour testing session. Johnny Leonard spun in turn two and Kelly Bires looped his car in turn four but neither driver made wall contact.

Fourteen IPOWER DASH Series cars took to the track during the afternoon in preparation for the May 22 IPOWER DASH Series 75. The DASH Series testing session, which was scheduled for six hours, was nearly cut in half by rain showers which twice interrupted the action.

The only incident during DASH testing took place near the end of the session when Alex Free lost control and hit the wall in turn four. The car was heavily damaged but Free was checked and released from the Carolinas HealthCare Infield Care Center.

The practice session concluded pre-race testing for all May events at Lowe¿s Motor Speedway. The next on-track action comes Thursday night, May 20, when NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams practice and qualify for the May 21 Infineon 200.

Tickets for all events, including the May 22 NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge and the May 30 Coca-Cola 600, are still available and can be obtained by calling 1-800-455-FANS or online at
