The behemoth school buses that will compete in round five of the Hardee¿s Summer Shootout Tuesday night at Lowe¿s Motor Speedway defy every principle of motorsports engineering.

They are too long (nearly 30 feet); they are too heavy (tipping the scales at 13 tons); their roof height is too high (112 inches); their tires are too narrow (only seven inches); and their wind tunnel numbers resemble those of a brick wall.

¿But that¿s exactly why their races are so outstanding,¿ said H.A. ¿Humpy¿ Wheeler, president and general manager of Lowe¿s Motor Speedway. ¿Racing school buses defies all logic, but watching the massive creations being manhandled around a quarter-mile oval is very entertaining.¿

The fleet of brightly painted school buses will be driven by an array of local media personalities and motorsports celebrities, including Mr. Bill; Lug Nut, the world¿s fastest mascot; and Dirty Dan the Fan.

A full slate of Legends Car, Bandolero and Thunder Roadster racing is also on tap with nearly 170 race cars expected to jam the pit area.

Round five marks the half-way point in the 10-week Hardee¿s Summer Shootout which runs every Tuesday night through Aug. 17.
