A roll of the dice paid dividends for Thomas Van Wingerden while Clay Hair brushed off a fierce challenge during round eight of the Hardee¿s Summer Shootout Tuesday night at Lowe¿s Motor Speedway.

With a gamble that would have scored big in Las Vegas, Van Wingerden chose the outside lane on a lap 13 restart; quickly moved to the point ahead of Ben Stancill and cruised to victory in the Tom Johnson Camping Center Legends Car Pro division.

The Huntersville, N.C., racer was running 10th when a five-car accident on lap 13 brought out the red flag and forced a green-white-checkered finish. Stancill settled for second while Beau Slocumb scored a third-place finish in the top division of Legends Car competition.

In a battle reminiscent of the Petty-Pearson era, Hair and John Sossoman waged war in the 20-lap feature for the Holiday Inn University Legends Car Masters division.

Hair went from third to the lead with a single move on lap 17. But not to be outdone, Sossoman dove inside a lapped car to take the lead entering turn three on the final trip around the quarter-mile oval. Sossoman¿s time at the point was short-lived however, as he pushed high in turn four. Hair went back by on the inside to claim his fourth victory of the season and extend his point lead. Sossoman settled for second with Bill Crowder third.

Rock Hill, S.C., resident Scott Whittaker notched his first victory of the season in the Quaker Steak & Lube Thunder Roadster feature. Whittaker started from the pole and was never headed in the 20-lap race as a torrid battle waged behind him. Steve Zacharias equaled his best showing of the season in second with Michael Van Wingerden completing the top three.

Charlotte¿s Andrew Rogers was the top banana in the Raceape.com Legends Car Semi-Pro division, capturing his second feature win of the summer with a last-lap pass. Scooter Hillis led all but one lap of the 20-lap race yet had to settle for second followed by Jess Mattox. Rogers closed the gap on division point leader Scott Knox who finished fourth.

Heavy rain last week resulted in twin 20-lap features for the TopChoice for Fire Ants Bandolero Bandits and the Cabarrus Family Medicine Bandolero Young Guns.

In the first event for the TopChoice for Fire Ants Bandits, Darrell Wallace Jr. added his name to the list of feature winners in the division for racers ages 8 to 11. The Concord, N.C., resident started sixth in the 22-car field, took command on lap 10 and held off Zachary Stroupe over the final half of the race. Chad Atkins settled for show honors.

The second 20-lap run for the Bandolero Bandits saw Rock Hill, S.C., resident Cole Miktuk claim his third victory of the season. After starting 12th in the 22-car field, Miktuk charged to the front on lap six and cruised to the checkered flag. In a repeat of the first race, Stroupe finished second with Atkins third.

Tyler Green, son of veteran NASCAR Busch Series driver Mark Green, extended his point lead by storming to victory in the first 20-lap feature for the Cabarrus Family Medicine Young Guns. Green started ninth, took the lead on lap five and was never challenged en route to his second victory of the year. The Concord, N.C., driver was followed across the stripe by Jordan Penninger and Jake Crum in the division for racers ages 12 to 15.

In race No. 2 for the Bandolero Young Guns, Jake ¿The Snake¿ Crum finally broke the ice, winning his first feature of the season. The Statesville, N.C., resident slid his red No. 1 into the top spot on lap five and was unchallenged for the remainder of the 20-lap distance. Bret Hylton claimed second with Josh Butler next under the checkered flag.

Ryan Jernigan of Hickory, N.C., visited victory lane for the fourth time in the 20-lap finale for the Premise Termite Elimination Bandolero Outlaws. Jernigan methodically worked his way to the front, took the lead on lap seven and never looked back en route to his second consecutive victory. Point leader Bruce Benson II chased Jernigan across the stripe with Jason Haynes third.

Rusty Drye made it two in a row, topping the 15-lap feature for the unruly Road Hawgs. The Concord, N.C., racer started seventh in the 10-car field and used a daring three-abreast moved to take the lead from Randy Spivey on lap 12. Chris James claimed second with Spivey slipping to third at the checkered flag.

The One-on-One Spectator Races feature fans driving their personal street cars in a door-to-door and fender-to-fender series of single-elimination runs around the quarter-mile oval.
