School Bus Racing Tuesday Night
Racing school buses on a quarter-mile oval defies logic. The buses are too long (nearly 30 feet); they are too heavy (tipping the scales at 13 tons); their roof height is too high (112 inches); their tires are too narrow (only seven inches); and their wind tunnel numbers resemble those of a brick wall.
"But that's exactly what makes school bus racing so entertaining," said H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway. "It is motorized mayhem at its finest."
Presented by Thomas Built Buses, the school bus race will feature several of the brightly painted behemoths battling bumper-to-bumper and window-to-window. The buses will be driven by an array of local personalities including legendary school bus racer Dirty Dan the Fan, Boz the Bumper Basher and Lug Nut, the world's fastest mascot.
The Hardee's Summer Shootout, which runs each Tuesday night through Aug. 16, also features three classes of Bandolero racing, three divisions of Legends Cars and the Thunder Roadsters.
Admission is just $5 for adults. Children 6-12 are admitted for $3 and kids under 6 are free. Tickets are available in advance at the speedway ticket office and at Gates 4 and 5 the night of the event. Parking is free. Contact the speedway ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS for information or to purchase tickets.
Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with preliminary action at 5:30 p.m. Feature racing begins at 7:30 p.m. and is scheduled to conclude by 10:15.
