Hemric and Hair Dominate Summer Shootout Series Round Nine; Both Move Closer to Division Championships
Daniel Hemric and Clay Hair each moved one step closer to clinching championship titles in their respective divisions as the Summer Shootout Series drivers were among the feature winners Tuesday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway
Round nine of the 10-week series saw competitors participate in an action-packed program that included 11 main events, Charlotte Roller Girls and CRASHCars.
In the Bath Fitter Legends Car Pro feature Hemric drove from the seventh starting position to the lead by the halfway point of the race. He held off a late charge from Buescher and back-flipped into Victory Lane. Buescher settled for second while John Freeman finished third.
The win extended his point lead going into the final round of the series.
Hair dominated once again in the Masters feature. The Mt. Pleasant, N.C., native took the top spot on lap six after battling side-by-side down the backstretch with John Sossoman. The rest of the field proved to be no match for Hair after he led the remaining laps and claimed his fifth Summer Shootout victory of the season.
Second place went to Hoyt Demis and Sossoman rounded out the top three.
Justin Carroll, of Concord, N.C., won his second race of 2009 after battling Matthew Linker in the Bandolero Young Guns/Outlaw feature.
Carroll started fourth, and quickly moved to second place behind Linker. The two checked out on the field, but Carroll was able to take advantage after Linker got sideways on lap 11 coming out of the fourth turn. He secured the lead on lap 12, and took the checkered flag on lap 16 after the race was shortened due to time constraints.
Linker settled for second and Evan Bell came home in third.
Other round nine feature winners included: Scott Hensley, of Olive Branch, Miss., in the Legends Young Lions division; Tyler Kivett, of Kannapolis, N.C., in the Briggs Collision Legends Car Semi-Pro division; and Clayton Weatherman, of Wentzville, Mo., in the Bandolero Bandits division.
In the first of five features postponed by rain the previous week, the Weatherman brothers scored a one-two finish in the Bandolero Bandits division, a feat they repeated later in the evening as well.
Kyle Weatherman, of Wentzville, Mo., started fifth, but took the lead away from Carson Ferguson on lap six and never looked back as he drove on to claim his fourth victory of 2009. The win expanded his lead in the championship standings.
Clayton Weatherman moved through the field to take second and Dalton Sargeant crossed the line in third.
Hemric also made his way to Victory Lane in the delayed Bath Fitters Legends Car Pro feature. Starting from sixth position he quickly worked his way to the front. By lap four Hemric was second behind Zac Kittle.
Hemric closed in fast and made the pass for the lead on lap eight and pulled away from the field during the remainder of the caution-free race. Kittle finished second with Chris Buescher close behind in third.
The other postponed races were won by Austin Langenstein of Concord, N.C., in the Young Guns/Outlaw feature; Timmy Hill of Port Tobacco, Md., in the Legends Car Young Lions division; and Hair in the Masters division.
Rusty Drye, driving Vigilante, won a side-by-side battle with Bobby Lawless in Off Duty to emerge victorious in the CRASHCar feature race. Jeremy Troiano drove Trouble to a third-place finish.
The 16th annual Summer Shootout Series continues Tuesday night, Aug. 11, with Championship night at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Spectators can see which drivers will take home the glory as the 10-week series comes to a close. The evening will also include wild and wacky school bus racing featuring principals from Cabarrus County.
In addition to the school bus race, a full slate of Legends Car and Bandolero action is scheduled. Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with feature racing at 7:30 p.m.
Adult tickets are just $7 with children ages 6 to 12 admitted for $3 and kids under 6 are free. For more information contact the ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS or go online at www.charlottemotorspeedway.com.
