Jimmie Johnson Wins Pole for NASCAR Banking 500 only from Bank of America!
Jimmie Johnson waited out the mist and drizzle during Bojangles' Pole Night at Charlotte Motor Speedway to claim the pole for Saturday night's NASCAR Banking 500 only from Bank of America. His blistering lap of 192.376 mph set the record for the fastest qualifying lap ever run in the Car of Tomorrow. Johnson didn't let the shortened schedule or wet weather dampen his spirits.
"Things have been great for us today, even with the short practice," Johnson said. "Each time out we really didn't make any changes, it was really just me gaining more confidence. The lap was good. I think the track was a little slick compared to what it was in practice. It was a good lap, but it was just one, we've got 500 miles to run.
"I could be wrong, but I don't think I've gone that fast before. I couldn't believe it, that I could drive it that hard and it didn't budge."
Mark Martin will join his Hendrick Motorsports teammate on the front row after laying down a lap of 191.816 mph in his No. 5 Pop-Tarts/CARQUEST Chevrolet.
"An enormous amount of that speed was track conditions," Martin said, "Surprisingly, it was really fast, grippy, for no rubber. I think it's going to be great. It's always great racing here, and it continues to get better."
Kasey Kahne ran only a handful of laps between practice and qualifying and put his No. 9 Budweiser Dodge in the third starting position with a lap of 191.056 mph.
"I'm real happy that NASCAR went ahead and found the time to get practice in and get some qualifying in, because I think qualifying here is a lot of fun and it's a big part of the weekend, so I'm glad they went ahead and stayed a little late," said Kahne.
Matt Kenseth and Tony Stewart rounded out the top five. The full starting lineup for the NASCAR Banking 500 is available online.
