Pittman, Lanigan and Friesen Score Friday Night Wins At Bad Boy Buggies World of Outlaws World Finals
Daryn Pittman, Darrell Lanigan and Stewart Friesen each scored A-Main wins on Friday night in front of a packed house at The Dirt Track at Charlotte during the eighth annual Bad Boy Buggies World of Outlaws World Finals.
Fans from 48 states and as far away as Australia filled the newly named Steve Kinser Grandstand and the pit area for the second night of the World Finals at the lightning-fast, four-tenths-mile clay oval. The three-day event brings together dirt racing's three premier divisions, the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds, to end their seasons and crown their respective champions.
Thirty laps just wasn't enough to decide Friday night's main event for the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, which saw Pittman take the checkered flag, holding off Rico Abreu and a hard-charging Brad Sweet on a green-white-checkered finish.
"We had a really good car," Pittman said. "We're making a lot of power, but (our cars are) really drivable. We're really excited about next year. I'm only as good as the people around me, and I've got some of the best. It's a lot of fun to come out here and run up front.
"This track has always been a little bit of - you never know what you're going to get, but from last night to tonight, it's been really good. It's been a lot of fun to race on."
Pittman took the lead on lap 19 of the 30-lap feature, passing Abreu, who lead a race-high 17 laps before his runner-up finish.
Despite leading the final 11 circuits, Pittman's win was anything but easy. Jason Sides brought out the race's third caution on the final lap of the scheduled 30-lap event, giving Abreu one last chance at a win during his first visit to The Dirt Track.
"The bottom got really clean there at the end," Abreu said. "I thought I had a really good car tonight, I just feel like I needed to make some better decisions just watching and judging cars. It's cool to come here to Charlotte and run up front."
Kasey Kahne Racing's Brad Sweet took home the win in Friday's B-Main before making a furious charge in the A-Main that ended with a third place finish. Danny Lasoski and Greg Hodnett rounded out the top five.
Terry McCarl won the Dash and lead the field to green, but fell off the pace early and finished 10th. Brian Brown was victorious in the C-Main and Shane Stewart took the checkered in the D-Main. Heat race winners included McCarl, Joey Saldana, Kody Swanson, Bill Balog and Abreu.
Lanigan, of Union, Kentucky, led just one lap Friday in the World of Outlaws Late Model A-Main, but it's the only one that mattered. He took the checkered over Chris Madden who got caught up in lap traffic after leading 47 of the race's 50 laps.
"I didn't even know it was the last lap," Lanigan said. "It's unbelievable. I'm telling you, I drove my butt off."
With three laps remaining, the Bluegrass Bandit rode the high line into second place and quickly chased down Madden, passing him in the final corner to take the checkered flag and take home the $12,000 prize. Scott Bloomquist, Jimmy Owens and Dennis Erb Jr. rounded out the top five.
The win marked Lanigan's 70th career World of Outlaws win and his 17th this season.
Madden's late model was strong all night, especially during long runs, but he got caught up in the race's fourth caution after making contact with Chub Frank. Despite pulling away on the final restart, Madden was unable to hold off Lanigan in the end after once again catching Frank in the closing laps.
"Leading is definitely not the place to be when you catch lap traffic," Madden said. "We were good enough to win tonight."
Friday night's World of Outlaws Late Model B-Main winners were Steve Francis, Chase Junghans and Bub McCool.
With the win, Lanigan secured his third World of Outlaws Late Model Series championship, tying him with Josh "Rocketman" Richards for most all-time in the modern era.
Friesen, who started ninth in Friday's A-main for the Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modifieds, took advantage of the only caution of the night and rode the cushion from sixth to the lead in less than 10 laps before pulling away to a decisive win at the lightning-fast, four-tenths-mile clay oval.
"This track changes so much and it's so different from what we're used to up in the northeast," Friesen said. "Our tires are a little harder compound and it worked for us tonight. That was a lot of fun."
The win marked Friesen's second of the season and his second career victory at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
Pole-sitter Brett Hearn finished second, followed by Matt Sheppard, Duane Howard and Tyler Dippel.
"I thought we had the 9H (Sheppard) sized up pretty good until the black car (Friesen) came around us, and then I thought, 'Oh, man. Here he comes,'" Hearn said. "He really had it hooked up."
With his third place finish, Sheppard extended his overall Super DIRTcar Series points lead over Billy Decker (-20) and leads third place Hearn by 44.
The World Finals concludes tomorrow night with a full slate of feature races, wrapping up the seasons for all three of dirt racing's premier series. Limited seats are available, but fans are encouraged to arrive early as officials expect a standing room only crowd.
