Sammy Swindell, Jimmy Owens and Tim Fuller Win Friday's Features at PEAK World Finals
It was an action-filled night at The Dirt Track at Charlotte as Sammy Swindell, Jimmy Owens and Tim Fuller each claimed A-Feature wins Friday at the sixth annual PEAK Motor Oil World of Outlaws World Finals presented by NAPA Auto Parts.
Fans from 47 states, five Canadian provinces and three foreign countries packed the grandstands for the second night of the PEAK World Finals at the lightning-fast, four-tenths-mile clay oval. The three-day event brings together dirt racing's three premier divisions, the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds, to end their seasons and crown their respective champions.
Craig Dollansky started on the pole for the World of Outlaws Sprint Car 30-lap A-Feature after winning the six-lap dash, while Swindell started in the second position. After a caution on Lap 5, Dale Blaney moved into the point position. Young gun Brian Brown closed on Blaney, and the two had an intense battle for the top spot, each leading several times. On Lap 24, Blaney had a flat tire and dropped out of the race, leaving Brown in the lead.
With just two laps to go, wily veteran Swindell, of Germantown, Tenn., powered his way past Brown, who had used up his car in the battle with Blaney. Swindell led the final two laps to capture his second victory at The Dirt Track. Brown finished second with Kraig Kinser, Paul McMahan and Jason Johnson rounding out the top five.
“It’s great to get a win down here. I just had to be patient and I didn’t want to use up the tires or the car. We worked it out just right.” said Swindell. “They only pay for the last lap, so that’s the only one I wanted to lead.”
The winners of the five eight-lap sprint car heat races were Brooke Tatnell, Lance Dewease, Blaney, Swindell and Johnson. Jack Sodeman Jr. took the C-Feature and Jac Haudenschild won the last chance showdown.
Donny Schatz secured the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship on Thursday, but did not make the feature race.
Newport, Tenn.,-native Owens picked up the win in the 50-lap barnburner World of Outlaws Late Model Series feature. Darrell Lanigan started at the point, but Rick Eckert caught him after a caution on Lap 5. The two battled for the lead for nearly 25 laps. Owens started ninth, but had made it up to fifth position by Lap 6 and took over the third spot on Lap 10. Owens took over the lead on Lap 30 and pulled away.
Eckert began to catch him, but ran out of time and had to settle for second. Lanigan held on to the third position followed by Scott Bloomquist and Dale McDowell.
Lanigan clinched the 2012 World of Outlaws Late Model Series championship on Thursday.
The late model heat race winners for the night were Lanigan, Eric Wells, Eckert, Chris Madden, McDowell and Bloomquist. Steve Shaver, Tim Fuller and Chris Ferguson scored victories in the three B-Features.
World of Outlaws Late Model Series regular Fuller, of Edwards, N.Y., stole the win in the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modfied A-Feature.
Ryan Godown started on the pole for the 40-lap feature event, but after a caution on the first lap McCreadie, also a late model regular, moved into the lead. McCreadie held the point position until lap 28, when Fuller made his move to the lead. Fuller stayed out front in a race that had just one caution.
McCreadie settled for second as Brett Hearn, Godown and Gary Tomkins rounded out the top five.
Going into tomorrow night’s championship deciding event, Matt Sheppard holds a 60-point lead over Hearn and a 72-point lead over Jimmy Phelps.
The PEAK World Finals concludes tomorrow night with a full slate of feature races, wrapping up the seasons of all three series. A standing-room-only crowd is expected for Saturday night. Limited grandstand tickets are still available, but are going fast. Adult tickets are just $39 for adults and $15 for children 13 and under.
