Kick off your shoes and brush up on your best dance moves because The Speedway Club is going back in time with an old fashioned Sock Hop as a part of the April 7-10 Food Lion AutoFair at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The Sock Hop is just one of the Food Lion AutoFair’s special events and attractions, which include a street-legal Radio Flyer wagon, an assortment of “Beauties and Beasts” from American automakers, high-riding “skyscraper” sedans that roll on 30-inch custom wheels, a Legends of Drag Racing display, a collection of electric and hybrid cars and thousands of vehicles for sale or show.

The Sock Hop will take place on Saturday, April 9, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear attire from the '50s and '60s and be sure to wear those socks! The term "sock hop" comes from dancers who shed their shoes and danced in socks during dances held in school gymnasiums. Sock dancing saved the wood floors from being scratched by hard-soled shoes.

The Sock Hop will begin with a cash bar cocktail hour at 5 p.m. and dinner will start at 6 p.m. Dinner options from the award-winning chefs in The Speedway Club include “Cheeseburgers in Paradise,” a Caribbean-style salad bar, a pasta bar and ice cream sundaes.

Festivities for the evening will include a '50s and '60s trivia contest and a dance contest to see who does the best “Twist” and “Hand Jive.” Prizes will be awarded for “Best Dancer” and “Best Dressed.”

Tickets are $50 and all proceeds go to Speedway Children’s Charities Charlotte Chapter. Reservations can be made through The Speedway Club by calling (704) 455-3216.

“We hope that people young and old will come on out to The Speedway Club for a great time at an old-fashioned sock hop to support Speedway Children’s Charities,” said Emily Hudgens, director, Speedway Children’s Charities Charlotte Chapter.
