Special U.S. Flag, Love in the Air, "Fast Talk" From The Speedway Club Part of May Race Festivities
Milestones will be celebrated, a special flag will fly over the track and NASCAR celebrities will be in The Speedway Club as Charlotte Motor Speedway gears up for a thrilling month of racing in May, headlined by the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on May 21 and the Coca-Cola 600 on May 29.
Speedway Flag Flies in Afghanistan, Will Be Over Track During May Race Weeks
A very special U.S. flag will fly over Charlotte Motor Speedway during May race weeks. The flag is on its way back from Camp Dwyer in Afghanistan, a military base and air field for the U.S. Marine Corps. The flag was flown at the base in honor of the CMS Pit Crew, a group of Charlotte Motor Speedway employees who engage in community outreach projects to “help people get back on track.” The CMS Pit Crew is currently supporting 55 members of the U.S. Marines Air Control Squadron 2, Detachment Bravo in Afghanistan by sending items from home, including sunscreen, disposable hand and face wipes and pens and pencils. One member of the detachment, Cpl. Terry McKee, Jr., is the son of Susan McKee, human resources manager at the speedway. A photo of the flag can be seen at www.charlottemotorspeedway.com/multimedia/photo/.
Couples to Celebrate Special Anniversaries at the Speedway
Love will be in the air during May at Charlotte Motor Speedway as many couples will use race weeks in Charlotte as an occasion to celebrate special milestones. Valerie and Gary Smith from Charlotte, N.C., met in the grandstands during the 2010 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and were married in August, 2010. Valerie almost didn’t make the trip down to Charlotte from her original home in upstate New York, due to brake issues with her car. A friend loaned her a minivan to come to the race, where by chance she sat beside her future husband. “We’re so happy. Our life is so amazing now...all thanks to NASCAR and the speedway,” said Valerie Smith. “As a previously single woman, I hope a story like ours gives other women hope and keeps love alive!”
Also, Billy and Betty McGuire from Franklin, Ohio, will be at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600 on May 29 to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary on May 24. Billy has been a race fans for nearly 60 years and is a long-time supporter of Speedway Motorsports, Inc., tracks, having attended races at Bristol Motor Speedway, Kentucky Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway. The 78-year-old Billy said he and his 74-year-old bride decided to celebrate their special milestone at Charlotte because they love the area and the speedway. “Charlotte is one of the best tracks I’ve ever been to,” Billy said. “I just like it there. The racing gets better all the time.”
