Fans are in for a fiery treat at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals, Sept. 15–18, at zMAX Dragway. In addition to the spectacular night qualifying session on Friday, fans will see world famous fire acts Jimmy Pyro and Srikanta Barefoot perform both Friday and Saturday evening during during zMAX Dragway’s Nights of Fire.

Energemata Poi, featuring Jimmy Pyro, is a blend of fire arts including fire eating, fire breathing and much more. Based out of Atlanta, Ga., Pyro has been performing for three years professionally and practicing for nine years. His show is interactive and includes fire eating, fire breathing and fire dancing with poi, a staff and fire flag.

“The best part of the performance is when you’re about to do fire eating or fire breathing and you get the hush over the entire crowd and then right afterward when they all applaud because you just ate 3,500 degrees,” Pyro explained.

There’s an element of danger in both the motorsports world and the fire performance world that is sure to fascinate observers.

“The most dangerous thing you can do is fire breathing,” said Pyro. “That has the most casualties associated with it. I personally have been hospitalized from that. The most fire I use in an act is my fire flag. It puts out 3,500 degrees and is 17 inches of fire traveling five feet high. For safety precautions, I always have a full safety staff traveling with me, but thankfully have never had to use them.”

Srikanta Barefoot’s performance will feature beautiful and exciting fire dancing. Barefoot is a former performer with Cirque Du Soleil and combines object manipulation with acrobatics.

“The interaction with the audience, just playing with the audience and having that conversation and throwing that energy out at them and receiving it back, that whole play is why I’m into performing,” said Barefoot.

Friday night includes the only night qualifying session of the weekend, as Top Fuel dragsters, nitro Funny Cars, Pro Stocks and Pro Stock motorcycles all make passes under the lights. Fans get a new perspective of 8,000 horsepower in action as giant flames flare out of the headers of the nitro-powered cars. The performers will greet fans at the gates as well as put on a show both Friday and Saturday night at zMAX Dragway.
