NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race Pit Note #3: Patrick Wants to Race Into All-Star Race; Edwards Wants Another All-Star Win
PIT NOTE #3 Friday, May 16, 2014
PATRICK WANTS TO DRIVE WAY INTO ALL-STAR RACE -- Finishing eighth in Friday's final Sprint Showdown practice, 2013 Sprint Fan Vote winner Danica Patrick hopes on-track performance places her in this year's 22-car field.
"I was fortunate to win the Sprint Fan Vote last year," she said. "For them to be able to use their voice, or fingers, and vote for me and help me be better - that's playing a part. Hopefully that happens, but definitely every driver wants to be able to race their way in and not worry about the fan vote and that's my plan tonight."
Racing her way to Charlotte's Victory Lane is also Patrick's driving force in Saturday's contest.
"I would say that when you're in the car, you're not thinking about the fact that I need to pass for a million dollars," said No. 10 GoDaddy.com driver. "If it was just about money, I don't think that would be enough for any of us. It's about heart. It's about doing your best, and it's about making the most of the night.
The results don't necessarily matter unless you win, so you might as well go for it. For me, that's what I feel like my attitude is towards it."
ONE ALL-STAR WIN NOT ENOUGH FOR EDWARDS -- With a points win at Bristol under his belt this season, Carl Edwards is guaranteed a spot in this year's Chase for the Sprint Cup. With that pressure off of him, a win at this year's All-Star race would only sweeten the deal. Along with the potential million-dollar prize Edwards is also looking to get some practice in at Charlotte Motor Speedway before the Coca-Cola 600, which he has never won.
"Hopefully we'll learn a little bit for next weekend, the 600 would be a great race to win since we've run third a couple of time in that race. If we can't win the All-Star race the second best thing would be to learn something to help us win the 600."
Edwards last won the All-Star race in 2011 and is currently 5th in the points. But even though he's already clenched a Chase spot, he's still trying for a second All-Star victory.
"At the end of the day we're all capable of a lot, including a lot of things we wish we weren't capable of. I have a feeling that if we have a restart with a green-white-checker for a million bucks its going to be an expensive salvage yard down in turn one."
