Nearly 900 people participated in Speed for Children in Need presented by WSOC-TV and TV64 held at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Dec. 10. The inaugural event, which benefited the Charlotte Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities (SCC) and the Hendrick Marrow Program, included a 5K, a track walk and a kid’s dash.

The Speed for Children in Need 5K presented by WSOC-TV and TV64 is this Saturday, Dec. 10. In addition to the 5K run/walk, there will also be a 1.5-mile track walk where race fans can walk in the tire tracks of some of the biggest names in racing and experience the steep 24-degree banking. Also, children can participate in their own mini run/walk with the Kid’s Dash and receive a prize. The Speed for Children in Need 5K will start at 3 p.m. The track walk will be held at 4 p.m. with the 5K Awards at 4:15 p.m. The Kid’s Dash will start at 4:30 p.m. More information can be found here.

The Performance Racing Network (PRN) has added WRFX 99.7 FM “The Fox,” Charlotte, N.C.’s “Best Classic Rock” station, as the new flagship station in the heart of NASCAR country to its lineup of affiliate partners. Starting with Sunday’s broadcast of the Kobalt Tools 400 from Las Vegas at 3 p.m. EST, WRFX 99.7 FM will carry PRN’s live broadcast of 13 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point races this season.

Construction crews using dump trucks and excavators have begun preparations for the debut of the world’s largest HD video board at Charlotte Motor Speedway’s 2011 May race events. Crews from Granite Contracting, of Concord, N.C., are using the heavy earth-moving equipment this week for the initial grading on the backstretch near Gate 25 where the gigantic, nearly 16,000-square-foot board will be located.

Kenny Crites, of Charleston, S.C., is the lucky new owner of Tommy Pike’s powerful custom Cobra replica after winning Speedway Children’s Charities custom car raffle. The raffle began nearly four months ago during the August Food Lion AutoFair at Charlotte Motor Speedway and more than 1,000 tickets were sold, raising nearly $24,000 for children in need.
