Officials from the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) honored Speedway Motorsports Chairman and CEO, O. Bruton Smith, Monday evening at the season-ending NHRA awards ceremony in West Los Angeles, Calif., for his “extraordinary contributions and positive impact” on the sport of NHRA drag racing.

Cory McClenathan remained atop the Top Fuel field and secured his fifth No. 1 qualifying position of the season for the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at zMax Dragway. Remaining No. 1 qualifiers were Cruz Pedregon (Funny Car), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and LE Tonglet (Pro Stock Motorcycle).

Jessica Hamilton didn't see the pickup truck coming that took her life. If she had taken an extra second to check her rearview mirror, the 18-year-old might be alive today. Teaching teenagers to take that extra second is the goal of B.R.A.K.E.S., the teen safe driving organization founded by NHRA Top Fuel drag racer Doug Herbert after the deaths of his own sons and supported by Speedway Children's Charities.

Traffic around Concord Mills Mall is expected to be heavy Friday Aug. 6 through Sunday Aug. 8, due to the August Sales Tax Holiday in North Carolina. zMAX Dragway officials recommend NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals attendees utilize Highways 29 and 49 to enter/exit the dragway area and avoid Interstate 85.

Sure, Chris Rini and Chris Tuten have normal jobs, but their true passion is drag racing. Rini, a passenger on U.S. Airways Flight 1549 from New York to Charlotte, N.C., that crashed into the Hudson River, is a record-setting racer with multiple championships under his belt. South Carolina-native Tuten is a two-time drag racing champion with more than 15 years experience.

The July 14 finale of the Summer Drag & Brag Series featured a car count of more than 100 cars and some great grudge-racing action. Daniel Gonzalez of Concord, N.C. recorded a perfect .000 second reaction time during round six of Summer Drag & Brag in his 2005 Nissan Sentra. He also took home the night’s Iron Man award for making 23 passes.

Round five of the Summer Drag & Brag Series saw the debut of Minivan Madness at the Bellagio of drag strips on Wednesday evening. Wes Kiser in his 2009 Toyota Sienna beat out Phil Bonifield in a 2004 Chevrolet Van in the final round to take home the $100 Food Lion gift card.

Wednesday, at zMAX Dragway, PINKS All Out went green in honor of Earth Day. The popular SPEED TV series will return to the Bellagio of drag strips April 23-24. Cars that hit the track to promote eco-friendly fuels included four Toyota Camry pace cars raced by fans who won a contest on FOX Got Game, four entirely electric cars provided by Li-ion Motors Corp., and several race vehicles powered by BioWeapon Racing Fuel.

Drag racing's most well-known newbie, 2004 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Kurt Busch, will be attempting some unusual double duty on Saturday, April 24. Barring inclement weather, Busch will qualify his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge at Talladega Superspeedway, then fly to Concord, N.C. to race his 1970 Dodge Challenger at zMAX Dragway during PINKS All Out.

NHRA announced today that O'Reilly Auto Parts has agreed to a multi-year deal to become the title rights sponsor of the third annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at zMAX Dragway, Sept. 16-19.
The O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals is the second of six races in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship, NHRA's playoff-style format to determine the world champions in each of its four Full Throttle Series classes.

John Force continued his resurgence and made history Monday by racing to victory at the rain-delayed NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway. It was the second win of the season for the 60-year-old Funny Car icon, who increased his series points lead to 89 over his rivals.

The completion of the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals has been postponed until Monday morning due to weather. Spectator gates will open at 9 a.m., and Sportsman classes will take the track at 10 a.m.. Top Fuel and Funny Car finals will follow at 11 a.m.. Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle semi-finals and finals will be run immediately following.
