Darin Roberts Wins Principal School Bus Race in a Spectacular Opening Night at the 20th Annual Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series
It was a wild and crazy start to the 20th annual Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series, as Tyler Green, Rodney Tharp and John Holleman picked up wins. In addition, Darin Roberts of Carl A. Furr Elementary took home the trophy in the first of two nights of principal school bus races on the frontstretch quarter-mile oval of Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Roberts claimed the victory in a spectacular school bus slobberknocker where he went from almost flipping in the middle of the pack to leading the race within two laps. Roberts beat out second-place Tripp Aldredge of Harris Road Middle School, Tim Farrar of Northwest Cabarrus Middle School, Chuck Borders of Pitts School Road Elementary, Adam Auerbach of Wolf Meadow Elementary, Jim Carroll of Hickory Ridge Middle School and Greg Liddle of Mount Pleasant High School.
The principals will return tomorrow night for a rematch, where they will line up according to tonight's finish.
Legends All-Star winner and China Grove, N.C.-native, Green, captured the Legend Car Pro division win during the first round of the Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series. After a three-car inversion, Green started in third, but blasted to the lead on lap 4 while Daniel Hemric battled Ryan Shattuck for second place.
On lap 13, the yellow flag flew for contact between Evan Swilling and T.J. Michael, and caution flew again on lap 15 for Gregory Lang, who nosed his car into the wall in Turn 4. On the restart, Green led the way and Hemric chose the outside lane to start on the front row. Green would hold the point position unchallenged the rest of the way. Hemric finished second, Kaz Grala finished third, Shattuck claimed fourth and Steven Cantrell battled through the field to finish fifth.
In the Security Force Legend Car Masters division feature, Tharp claimed his first win at the Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series.
Tharp started the feature race in 11th place, with Bruce Silver taking the pole. Silver maintained his lead for one lap, until John Craig pushed to the front on the second lap. Craig held the point position until lap 20.
After a caution on lap 24, Tharp restarted in second place and eventually took the lead from Tom Pistone, taking the victory. Carl Cormier finished in second place, with Eddie Harwell taking third. Rounding out the top five were Chip Ferguson and Silver.
In the Bandolero Outlaws feature race, Holleman, of Winston-Salem, N.C., led the field to the green. Holleman led the first seven laps but was contested closely by Austin Green who eventually took the lead on lap 7 after a lengthy side-by-side battle. A solo spin by Matt Davey on lap 8 brought out the caution. On the restart, going into Turn 1, a multi-car wreck broke out including Scott Joy and Daniel Bedford. The next restart resulted in another multi-car wreck involving lead contender Green, Miguel Cesar, and seven other racers. With Green out of the race, Holleman retained the lead and went on to take the win.
After 12 laps, the rest of the top five included Jacob Heafner in second, Alton Clark in third, Alex Reece in fourth and Eric Brown in fifth. There were a total of five cautions during 12 total laps.
Other winners included Payton Ryan, of Concord, N.C., in the Legend Car Young Lions division; Ryan Mackintosh, of Kannapolis, N.C. in the Legend Car Semi-Pro division; Chandler Smith, of Jasper, Ga., in the Bandolero Bandits division and Kayla Lyons, of Rock Hill, S.C., in the Beginner Bandits.
