WCCB's Brandon Davidow Wins Media Mayhem Drag Race at zMAX Dragway
As zMAX Dragway gears up to host the opening round of the NHRA's Countdown to the Championship Sept. 12-14, local media members took to the track for the second round of Media Mayhem on Wednesday.
After two fast-paced rounds of qualifying and bracket-style rounds of eliminations, WCCB's Brandon Davidow bested the field to take home the coveted drag racing trophy and earn crucial points in the year-long Media Mayhem competition.
"I'm so excited to take this home for WCCB," Davidow said. "Last year I was lucky enough to win the bus race and I came in second here last year. So I just wanted this opportunity to go again and try to win it. It was just so much fun. Love racing here. This is great."
Davidow earned the win in a photo-finish over WBTV's Brandon Tomlin, posting a 15.328 second pass to Tomlin's 15.364. Time Warner Cable News' Matthew East earned the No. 1 qualifying spot with an event-low 15.087 second pass.
"(Last year), the biggest competition was (NBC News Channel's) Herman Towe, who wasn't driving this year. I just told him was glad to see him out on the sidelines. (WCCB's) Rance (Adams) and I, we had a little battle between us and I was just happy Rance advanced one round this year. Last year it didn't work out to well for him."
In addition to testing their mettle at the Bellagio of drag strips, media heard from NHRA Pro Stock driver and current Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Pro Stock points leader Jason Line about kicking off the NHRA Countdown at zMAX Dragway in two weeks.
"We're leading the points, so it's been a good year," Line said. "We always look forward to coming back here. If you've never been to another drag strip, unfortunately you get ruined because this is the nicest drag strip. It is the Bellagio of drag strips. We love coming here. Being this close to home is a better deal yet. We always look forward to coming back here."
The third and find round of the 2014 Media Mayhem is scheduled for Oct. 2 and will feature go-kart racing on the infield road course at Charlotte Motor Speedway's legendary 1.5-mile superspeedway.
