The record $6,279,649 in posted prize money for the May 29 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway includes $35,000 in new bonuses which reward competition during the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race.

"These drivers are the absolute fiercest competitors and they don't like to lose at anything," said H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway. "We've come up with 'carrots' that we're going to dangle in front of them at various points, basically creating several races within the race.

"We're going to reward the driver who leads at half-way along with the drivers who lead at six other designated points throughout the race. There's also money for the driver who leads the most times under the green flag," Wheeler added. "These new awards give drivers an incentive to really mix it up and, after what we saw during testing, fans can expect the best Coca-Cola 600 we've seen in several years."

The unique awards include: $10,000 to the leader at lap 200, the half-way point of the 400-lap race; $10,000 to the driver who takes the lead under green the most times; and $2,500 each to the leaders of laps 50, 100, 150, 250, 300 and 350.

Tickets for the May 29 Coca-Cola 600, which includes a spectacular aerial pre-race show and a performance by the "American Idol" stars, start at just $49 and can be obtained online at www.charlottemotorspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-455-FANS.
