NASCAR drivers competing in the Oct. 15 UAW-GM Quality 500 and the Oct. 14 Dollar General 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway will be battling for a record $6,133, 806 in posted prize money.

The record awards for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series events are part of a $6,184,306 purse announced today for the four nights of racing that comprise the Oct. 12-15 UAW-GM Quality 500 Week schedule of events.

The record NASCAR purse of $6,133,806 represents an increase of $75,984 over the prize money posted for the same two races just one year ago and is $2.8 million greater than was paid for the October events just five years ago.

"Since the price of gas is on everyone's mind, let's compare how the price of gas and the prize money for the UAW-GM Quality 500 have changed since the first race in 1960," said H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway. "In 1960, the average price of gas was 26 cents a gallon and the purse for the October race was $46,112.

"Today, gas is right at three dollars a gallon and the race purse is nearly $5 million," Wheeler continued. "Gas is 12 times higher than it was 45 years ago, but the $4.9 million race purse is 108 times greater. Fortunately gas hasn't increased as dramatically as race purses!"

The UAW-GM Quality 500 on Saturday night, Oct. 15, will be worth a record $4,960,384, an increase of $23,843 over last October's NEXTEL Cup event at the 1.5-mile superspeedway.

Featuring several NASCAR NEXTEL Cup drivers battling the Busch Series regulars, competitors in the Dollar General 300 on Friday night, Oct. 14, will be chasing the lion's share of a record $1,173,422 in posted prize money and awards, an increase of $52,141 from last year.

The wild-and-crazy CRASHCars will return for an evening of motorized mayhem on the frontstretch quarter-mile following NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series qualifying during Bojangles' Pole Night on Thursday, Oct. 13. Driving basically stock automobiles that cost around $3,000 to prepare for racing, CRASHCar competitors will be banging fenders for a $20,000 purse with $5,000 earmarked for the winner.

The third annual Mopar Sprint Car Nationals on Wednesday night, Oct. 12, at The Dirt Track @ Charlotte Motor Speedway will see the USAC Valvoline National Sprint Car Series and the Dixie Thunder Series Late Models compete for $30,500 in posted awards.
