A replica of the No. 99 Schwam Motor Co. Ford that NASCAR legend Curtis Turner drove to victory in the 1956 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway is among the automobiles scheduled to cross the auction block April 7-8 at Charlotte Motor Speedway when Tom Mack Classics presents Auction @ AutoFair.

The two-day auction is part of Food Lion AutoFair, the nation's largest automotive extravaganza. In addition to the auction, Food Lion AutoFair, which runs April 6-9 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, includes a car show featuring various makes and models from more than 50 clubs; 10,000 vendor spaces that offer a plethora of automotive parts and memorabilia; and a car corral with nearly 1,500 vehicles available for sale or trade.

Known as the "Purple Wild Hog," Turner's No. 99 Ford was clearly the class of the Southern 500 field on Sept. 3, 1956, as the Virginia native led 225 of the 364 laps and was more than two laps ahead of Speedy Thompson when the checkered flag was unfurled.

Over four years of research and restoration went into constructing the No. 99 replica which was completed in 1998. The car has been featured in a documentary film detailing Turner's life and has earned numerous car show awards. It is powered by a Ford Y block engine with a dual four-barrel intake and breather. The car still carries its original Ford identification plate.

Also included among the more than 300 cars slated to cross the auction block is a 1978 Volkswagen Beetle convertible owned by radio personality Robert D. Raiford. Purchased new on Oct. 1, 1977, Raiford has meticulously maintained the VW for nearly 30 years. The car is white, has its original white interior and sports a new black convertible top.
