$6.3 Million Purse for Bank of America 500 Week
The record awards for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series events are part of a $6,397,781 purse announced today for the four nights of racing that comprise the Oct. 11-14 Bank of America 500 Week schedule of events.
The record NASCAR purse of $6,322,231 represents an increase of $188,425 over the prize money posted for the same two races just one year ago and is $1.5 million greater than was paid for the October events just five years ago.
"Having been around this sport for more than 30 years, these prize money figures continue to astonish me," said H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway, who announced the record purse during an appearance at Bank of America with the help of NASCAR driver Kyle Busch. "But with the Chase for the NEXTEL Cup so close, most of these guys won't even be looking at the money. They know racing is a momentum sport and winning the Bank of America 500 could start the ball rolling toward the championship."
The Bank of America 500 on Saturday night, Oct. 14, will be worth $5,078,500, an increase of $118,116 over last October's NEXTEL Cup event. It's also the first time posted awards for the 500-mile fall classic have topped $5 million.
Featuring more than 20 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup drivers battling the Busch Series regulars, competitors in the Dollar General 300 on Friday night, Oct. 13, will be chasing the lion's share of a record $1,243,731 in posted prize money and awards, an increase of $70,309 from last year.
The Jani-King Southern Showdown on Wednesday night, Oct. 11, at The Dirt Track @ Charlotte Motor Speedway will be highlighted by a 50-lap feature for the Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series. CRASHCars and a Monster Truck Freestyle Showdown are also on the schedule and $75,550 in posted awards will be up for grabs.
