Truex Jr. Wins NEXTEL Open
Carl Edwards may have started on the pole and led most of the caution-filled NEXTEL Open, but Martin Truex Jr. was there at the end to take the victory in Saturday night's preliminary race. Truex Jr. passed Edwards with three laps to go as the pole-sitter suffered from handling problems. Johnny Sauter also slipped past Edwards to claim second place and advance along with Truex into the All-Star Challenge field.
Martin Truex Jr. (No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet): "That was very cool and an awesome race. We've had kind of an up-and-down year, so this makes things a little better. The guys on my team gave me a good car. I knew when I went to make that pass on Carl that the car was going to stick. I knew if I didn't get around him then I wouldn't be able to later.
Johnny Sauter (No. 70 Yellow Transportation Chevrolet): "This is huge. I never thought we'd advance after starting 20th. All the guys on the team gave me a great car."
