Charlotte Motor Speedway Promotes Lauri Wilks, Roger Slack and Scott Cooper to Key Management Positions
Three Lowe's Motor Speedway employees, Lauri Wilks, Roger Slack and Scott Cooper, have been promoted to key management positions. The promotions were announced by H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president and general manager of the motorsports facility.
Wilks, 39, was promoted to executive vice president of management and administration; Slack, 33, was named vice president of events; and Cooper, 39, was promoted to vice president of communications.
"These three individuals have proven to be very effective managers and the promotions better position them to lead Lowe's Motor Speedway into the future," Wheeler said. "Their leadership skills will be beneficial in every aspect of our operation."
A native of Jackson, Mich., Wilks joined Lowe's Motor Speedway in 1993 and most recently served as senior vice president of administration. As executive vice president of management and administration, her responsibilities have been expanded to include supervision of the speedway's executive team and administration of the facility's day-to-day operations. She will also continue to serve as vice president of communications for Speedway Motorsports, Inc., the track's parent company.
Wilks graduated cum laude from Pennsylvania's Cedar Crest College in 1990 with degrees in history and political science and earned a law degree from Wake Forest University in 1993.
While in high school and college, Wilks worked as an intern at Michigan International Speedway and Lowe's Motor Speedway. She joined the Lowe's Motor Speedway events department staff after graduation and was immediately promoted to general counsel.
She assisted Wheeler and Chairman Bruton Smith in forming Speedway Motorsports, Inc., and taking the company public in 1995. At the time, she took on the added responsibilities of investor relations and corporate secretary for the new company. Wilks' role was expanded in 2005 when she became part of Lowe's Motor Speedway's management team. Wilks lives in Charlotte with her husband Whit and their two sons.
Previously director of events, Slack's duties have been expanded to include organization and execution of all speedway events, including car shows, short-track events and NASCAR races such as the Coca-Cola 600 and Bank of America 500.
Slack, a native of York, Ontario, grew up in a racing family and promoted his first event, a bicycle race, at age 6. He started flagging go-kart races at age 12 and eventually served as the chief starter for several touring motorsports organizations including the American Speed Association.
After graduating from McMaster University in 1997 with a degree in geography, Slack joined Lowe's Motor Speedway as an events coordinator, overseeing all short-track races. The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway was added to his responsibilities in 2000, and Slack has organized and promoted every event in the history of the four-tenths-mile facility. He was recently honored with two national Promoter of the Year awards in recognition of the track's 2007 season. Slack now lives in Huntersville, N.C.
Cooper, a native of Franklinton, N.C., previously served as the speedway's director of marketing and public relations. His responsibilities have been expanded to include management of the communications department and supervision of the speedway's publicity, advertising and media relations efforts.
Prior to joining the speedway in 1999, Cooper supervised production and personnel for the sports department of Charlotte television station WBTV. As executive sports producer, Cooper acted as managing editor for daily sportscasts and produced special programming on NCAA basketball, NASCAR and high school football. During his tenure, the station earned Emmy awards for Outstanding Sportscast and Best Sports Special.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Cooper resides in Harrisburg, N.C., with his wife Susan and their two children.
Lowe's Motor Speedway, one of the nation's largest sports facilities, is a subsidiary of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. (NYSE:TRK), a leading marketer and promoter of motorsports entertainment in the United States.
