Lauri Wilks, executive vice president of management and administration for Lowe's Motor Speedway, was honored Wednesday as the 2007 Charlotte Businesswoman of the Year.

The 22nd-annual awards luncheon took place at Queens University of Charlotte. Wilks was one of five finalists selected from a number of nominees representing Charlotte and the eight-county surrounding area.

The Charlotte Businesswoman of the Year Award was established in 1986 and honors the achievements of exceptional businesswomen in the for-profit sector, based on their contributions to the region's business, civic and cultural communities.

"Lauri has been a great asset to Lowe's Motor Speedway and Speedway Motorsports over the past 14 years," said H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president and general manager of the motorsports facility. "She demonstrates excellent leadership in our company and in our community on a daily basis and I'm proud she has been recognized as Charlotte Businesswoman of The Year."

A native of Jackson, Mich., Wilks, joined Lowe's Motor Speedway in August of 1993, after graduating from Wake Forest University School of Law, and was immediately promoted to general counsel.

She assisted Wheeler and Chairman Bruton Smith in forming Speedway Motorsports, Inc., and taking the company public in 1995. At that time, she took on the added responsibilities of investor relations and corporate secretary for the new company. Wilks' role was expanded in 2005 when she became part of Lowe's Motor Speedway's management team and she was promoted to executive vice president of management and administration in December.

"It is the ultimate honor to win this award because of the professional caliber of the four other nominees," said Wilks. "I am also blessed to work for a company that provides me the opportunity to achieve my professional goals and where we have fun every day."
