CRASHCars, School Bus Racing and Fireworks on Tap During 15th Annual Quaker Steak & Lube Summer Shootout Series
Radical school bus racing, a giant fireworks extravaganza and CRASHCars, an entry level stock car division that features character-themed race cars, are among the highlights of the 15th annual Quaker Steak & Lube Summer Shootout Series which kicks off June 10 and runs each Tuesday night through Aug. 12 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
In addition to the special attractions, each night of the 10-race Quaker Steak & Lube Summer Shootout features a full slate of Legends Car, Thunder Car and Bandolero racing. Tickets are just $7 for adults and $3 for children ages 6 to 12 while those under 6 are admitted free.
The Legends Car and Bandolero divisions will race on Charlotte Motor Speedway's frontstretch quarter-mile oval while the Full Throttle Thunder Cars will battle on the 1.5-mile superspeedway.
"The Summer Shootout is racing's version of Little League baseball," said H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway. "It features two distinct types of racers-those who compete as a hobby and those who have aspirations of one day advancing to NASCAR Sprint Cup racing.
"Summer Shootout fans get to watch the stars of tomorrow, today," Wheeler added. "Several series graduates, including Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch, David Ragan, Reed Sorenson and Steve Wallace, are among the NASCAR drivers who honed their skills in the series, and more are sure to follow."
CRASHCars will be in action six times during the 10-race series while three school bus races are also on the schedule.
More than 200 race cars are expected to jam the pit area during each night of the Quaker Steak & Lube Summer Shootout as drivers from across the country participate in Legends Car, Thunder Car and Bandolero competition.
Legends Car racing is divided into four categories based on a driver's experience. The Pull-a-Part Pro division features veteran drivers while the Coke Zero Semi-Pro category is for those with limited Legends Car experience and the Vault Young Lions division is for those new to Legends Car racing. The Coke Classic Masters division is for drivers 40 years of age and older.
The Bandoleros are also divided into three divisions with competitors grouped by age. The POWERade Bandits division is for racers ages
8 to 11 with the Sprite Young Guns featuring drivers ages 12 to 15. The Cherry Coke Outlaws division is for drivers 16 years of age and older.
