Christian Byrd Becomes Executive Director and GM of zMAX Dragway As Part of Several Personnel Moves at Charlotte Motor Speedway
Christian Byrd has been named executive director and general manager of zMAX Dragway @ Concord, the state-of-the-art drag racing facility which will open Sept. 11-14 with the inaugural NHRA Nationals.
Byrd's new position was announced by Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway, as part of several promotions and personnel moves at the multi-track motorsports facility.
"We are adding the finest drag strip in the world to the greatest speedway in the world, but the fan experience at all of our events depends on the people organizing and executing them," said Smith. "We are very fortunate to have a tremendous team at Charlotte Motor Speedway and these personnel moves allow us to better build on our reputation of presenting the best in motorsports entertainment."
Byrd assumes the top management role at the Bellagio of drag strips after serving as manager of business development for Speedway Motorsports, Inc., Charlotte Motor Speedway's parent company, since 2007.
A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., Byrd grew up in motorsports as his father, Jeff Byrd, was a motorsports marketing executive with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for several years prior to becoming president and general manager of Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway.
Before graduating from East Tennessee State University in 2001, Byrd worked in the Bristol Motor Speedway events department, assisting in the organization and presentation of the facility's NASCAR and NHRA events. He then moved to Charlotte and spent two years working with NASCAR's digital entertainment and brand/consumer marketing divisions.
In 2004, Byrd joined GMR Marketing and was eventually promoted to account director, managing the sports and partnership portfolio for Lowe's Home Improvement. Since joining Speedway Motorsports, Byrd has played a key role in growing and managing the company's portfolio of national sponsors.
In addition to Byrd's appointment, Matt Greci has been named manager of dragway operations for zMAX Dragway. Greci, a native of Granby, Conn., joined the Charlotte Motor Speedway corporate sales department in 2006 as track rental coordinator.
Greci will be responsible for scheduling and managing a variety of events at the nation's only drag strip to feature a four-lane, all-concrete racing surface.
