Drag Racing "Cacklefest" Lights Up Sept. 4-7 Food Lion AutoFair
As a lead-in to the inaugural NHRA Nationals at zMAX Dragway @ Concord, the Sept. 4-7 Food Lion AutoFair at Charlotte Motor Speedway will include a display of vintage drag racing machines.
Since its inception in 1951 as a way to stop illegal street racing, the California-based National Hot Rod Association has become the largest sanctioning body for drag racing in the world. At its premier level, the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing series, professional drivers compete on 24 drag strips around the country, their nitromethane/methanol-powered, 7,000-horsepower Top Fuel dragsters regularly hitting 325 mph.
The newest venue on the NHRA circuit is zMAX Dragway @ Concord, located on the grounds of Charlotte Motor Speedway. This state-of-the-art facility, which features the only all-concrete, four-lane quarter-mile in the world, will host the first of six races in the playoff-style NHRA POWERade Countdown to the Championship during the Sept. 11-14 NHRA Nationals.
At scheduled times during the Food Lion AutoFair, selected vintage dragsters will introduce the crowd to the concept of a "cacklefest" as their engines are fired up to create a sound unique to the world of drag racing.
The Blown Altered dragster owned by Jim Dickey and known as "My Favorite Charity III" and the legendary Hartsoe Bros. Gasser that was a national record-holder during the early 1970s will be among the vintage drag racing machines on display.
The fall Food Lion AutoFair annually attracts more than 120,000 visitors. It features more than 50 car club displays and more than 7,000 vendor spaces that offer a plethora of automotive parts and memorabilia.
More than 1,500 collectible vehicles of all makes and models will be available for sale in the car corral that rings the 1.5-mile superspeedway.
Food Lion AutoFair hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults while children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
Parking for the event is $5. For information, contact the Charlotte Motor Speedway events department at (704) 455-3205 or visit us online.
