On Thursday night, Ryan Newman nabbed his eighth career pole at Charlotte Motor Speedway and his fifth in the Coca-Cola 600. His lap of 188.475 mph beat out Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon for the top starting spot. Busch will join Newman on the front row, and Gordon will start in third.

"Yeah, right now, I'm going to call it even between me, the 18 and 24, and throw Tony Stewart in there on Sunday, too," said Newman about his chances in the 600.

This is Newman's 44th pole in 272 NASCAR Sprint Cup races. It is Busch's eighth top-10 start of 2009 and Gordon's 22nd top-10 start at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The Sprint Cup Series cars will take to the track next on Saturday for two practice sessions before the NASCAR Nationwide Series CARQUEST Auto Parts 300.
