Second-generation NASCAR Goody¿s Dash Series driver Justin Hobgood set the pace Monday as testing kicked off for the May schedule of racing events at Lowe¿s Motor Speedway.

With 29 teams preparing for the May 17 EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 100, Hobgood¿s black No. 65 Pontiac was caught at 153.018 mph by the unofficial stopwatches shortly before rain brought an early end to the session.

Hobgood¿s lap of 35.29 seconds was just a tick slower than the 35.22-second lap he recorded to claim the pole for last year¿s EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 100.

¿There are a lot of team owners who are looking for future drivers that watch our race here,¿ said the 23-year-old Hobgood who resides in Winnsboro, N.C. ¿It¿s the perfect opportunity for me to show what I can do.¿

Female racer Kelly Sutton was second fastest at 150.712 mph with Danny Bagwell (150.376), Johnny Chapman (150.209) and Eric Wilson (149.750) rounding out the top five in the sub-compact stock cars.

Defending EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 100 winner Robert Huffman was ninth fastest at 148.842 mph in his familiar yellow-and-white Toyota.

The only incident of the rain-shortened testing session came shortly after the lunch break when Richard Callihan lost control of the No. 48 machine in turn four. Callihan shot up the track, hit the outside retaining wall and then careened off the inside wall. His car was heavily damaged, but Callihan walked way uninjured.

Testing for the May events at Lowe¿s Motor Speedway continues Tuesday night, April 22, when the ARCA RE/MAX Series teams take the track in preparation for the May 22 ADG 100 presented by EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts.
