One might expect to hear the phrase "turn and burn" at a race track, but it will take on an entirely new meaning Sept. 11-14 at Charlotte Motor Speedway when the Zippo Lighter Car makes its first appearance at the Food Lion AutoFair.

One of the nation's most well-known "productmobiles," this customized 1947 Chrysler Saratoga has fanned the flames of imagination for onlookers across the United States with its two giant chrome lighters and glowing red flames that rise nearly 12 feet above the ground.

The Zippo Car debuted in the lighter company's hometown of Bradford, Pa., in 1947. By 1950, the Zippo Car had participated in nearly every major parade in the country and had toured all 48 states. But the weight of the enormous lighters caused several tire blowouts and forced the company to send the car to a Ford dealership in Pittsburgh for additional modifications. The project was put on hold and, mysteriously, the car eventually disappeared.

In 1996, Zippo purchased another 1947 Chrysler Saratoga and re-created the Zippo Car in the same fashion as the original, but this time with a heavy-duty suspension package, electric windows and a 350-cubic-inch Chevrolet V-8 engine.

"The Zippo Car is pleased to be featured in the Food Lion AutoFair," said Chris Funk, Zippo marketing communications associate. "The original Zippo Car first appeared in North Carolina tobacco country in 1949 and we're excited to be back."

Joining the Zippo Car in the Food Lion Pavilion will be a modern replica of a 1905 Wright Flyer airplane; more than 50 Harley-Davidson motorcycles including an Evel Knievel jump bike; SeaWorld's Shamu the Whale Car and a cool collection of convertibles.

Food Lion AutoFair hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $8 per day for adults and available at the gates. Children under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Parking for the event is $5.
