After having victory slip through his grasp in the closing laps of last year¿s event, Kerry Parnell of Kernersville, N.C., bounced back to post a convincing victory in the World Karting Association¿s 10th annual Briggs & Stratton 300 Saturday night on the frontstretch quarter-mile oval at Lowe¿s Motor Speedway.

Parnell lined up eighth in the 40-kart field and had worked his way up to third by lap 140. Then, when early leaders Jason Petty and Justin Hill suffered mechanical problems, Parnell took command on lap 170 and never looked back.

He was three laps ahead of second-place finisher Bob Baker of Holland, N.Y., when the checkered flag was unfurled on go-kart racing¿s premier oval-track event.

¿We weren¿t the fastest kart, but it¿s really nice up here on top of the podium,¿ said Parnell, who earned $2,500 plus numerous contingency awards for his victory. ¿How about my crew¿these guys are awesome. We came up a little short last year, but we¿ll definitely take this one and be happy with it.¿

¿My engine was a little off on the straightaways, but I picked good tires and it really handled through the corners,¿ said Baker, who settled for the $1,200 runner-up prize.

Michael Burns of Asbury, N.J., lined up 19th and methodically worked through the field to finish third with Justin Moorefield and Brian Sullivan completing the top five.

The race was slowed by only five caution flags, all for minor incidents, allowing Parnell to complete the 75-mile distance in 1 hour, 34 minutes and 33 seconds for average speed of 47.588 mph.

The Briggs & Stratton 300 was part of the 10th annual North American Karting Championship which concludes Sunday afternoon with a series or road-course races.
