One fan¿s unique tribute to hometown racing legend Dale Earnhardt will be among the cars featured in a special display celebrating the 40th birthday of the Ford Mustang during the April 1-4 Food Lion AutoFair at Lowe¿s Motor Speedway.

Kannapolis resident and former short-track stock car racer Ron Wetzler¿s highly customized 2001 Roush Mustang, known as The Blue Intimidator, will be among the automobiles chronicling the original pony car¿s 40-year history.

¿The reason I named the car The Blue Intimidator is because I know several people around Kannapolis who grew up with Dale Earnhardt and I thought it would be a great way to honor his memory,¿ Wetzler said about his brilliant blue Roush Mustang. ¿The car has been completely redone from the ground up and is way beyond anything Roush makes.¿

After hanging up his racing helmet, Wetzler said he needed a new toy, but noted that his dedication and passion for The Blue Intimidator became ¿a sickness that never went away.¿

Wetzler improved the Mustang¿s performance by rebuilding the engine and adding a supercharger, long-tube headers and braided hoses. For aesthetic appeal under the hood, he added a chrome alternator, an aluminum radiator and numerous polished pieces.

With its convertible top down, The Blue Intimidator sports a speedster tonneau cover that makes it appear to be a two-seater and Wetzler has also added racing-style front seats and a custom stereo. Work under the car includes the addition of chromed caster/camber plates and an aluminum driveshaft along with a high-performance shifter and rear-end.

Food Lion AutoFair is the nation¿s largest automotive extravaganza. The four-day event includes a car show featuring various makes and models from more than 50 clubs, thousands of parts and memorabilia vendors and a collector car auction conducted by Tom Mack. A car corral, located on the 1.5-mile superspeedway, features nearly 2,000 vehicles of all makes and models that are available for sale or trade.

Food Lion AutoFair hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults. Children under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Parking for the event is $5.
