$7.5 Million Infield Renovation Adds Amenities
In addition to better servicing its NASCAR events, this massive construction project will allow the speedway to grow its track rental program and offers the region a viable site for conventions and tourism-related business.
¿This project demonstrates our continuing commitment to growing and improving our facilities for our spectators, participants and track rental customers,¿ said H.A. ¿Humpy¿ Wheeler, president and general manager of the 1.5-mile superspeedway.
Six buildings are under construction, including two restroom/shower facilities for infield patrons, a second garage area for competitors and a state-of-the-art media center.
The new garage, located behind pit road on the turn-one side of the start-finish line, is identical to the NEXTEL Cup garage built in 1994. It features 48 bays for race cars, an inspection area and restroom facilities. The two garages, totaling more than 45,000 square feet, are designed for multi-purpose use and can easily accommodate trade show displays and large meetings along with product and service demonstrations.
The 22,650-square-foot media center features spacious work areas for print and electronic media along with the latest in high-speed wireless internet technology. It also includes a 100-seat theater-style conference area that can be utilized for a wide variety of meetings and functions.
A 6,372-square-foot building that includes restroom, shower and concession facilities is under construction in the middle of the infield and a similar 7,442-square-foot building is going up on the turn-four side of the NEXTEL Cup garage area.
A new victory lane, a 1,098-square-foot infield concession building and a Sunoco gas station are also part of the construction project. In addition, MUSCO is installing a new lighting system around the inside of the track.
In addition to its NASCAR races, Lowe¿s Motor Speedway is utilized nearly 300 days a year for driving schools, car shows, television commercials, motion picture filming, race car testing, trade shows, conventions and corporate hospitality events. The renovated infield will be able to accommodate more than 10,000 people for non-racing functions such as meetings, national conventions and trade shows.
