Brett ¿The Jet¿ Hearn zoomed through the field from the 12th-starting spot and recorded a convincing victory Friday night in the Charlotte Small-Block Championship portion of the Ferris 100 presented by DynoMax Weekend at The Dirt Track at Lowe¿s Motor Speedway.

The 45-year-old Sussex, N.J., veteran collected $3,000 for winning the season opener for DIRT Motorsports¿ Turning Stone Casino 358-Modified Super DIRT Series. The victory was Hearn¿s 444th in nearly 25 years of DIRT-sanctioned racing.

¿We had a good enough car to come from the back,¿ was Hearn¿s summation of his charge. ¿I got the lead from Matt (Sheppard), but I got a little lazy and let him get back in front of me. Then, he got tangled up with a lapped car, and we got lucky and got back in front.

¿It was a good race, a hard race. This is a very fast track,¿ Hearn concluded.

Pat Ward steadily worked forward from the eighth-starting spot to finish second in the 30-car field with 16th-starting Richie Pratt Jr. third under the checkered flag. Tim Fuller and Alan Johnson completed the top-five.

Johnson led the first two laps before young Stewart Friesen took command. Matt Sheppard moved to the point on lap 19, setting up a battle with Hearn that finally ended when Sheppard tangled with a slower car on lap 35. Hearn was never seriously challenged over the final 20 laps as late-race caution flags extended the distance to 55 laps.

The race was slowed by eight caution flags with the most serious incident coming on lap seven when six cars tangled exiting turn two. Several of the cars involved suffered heavy damage, but none of the drivers were injured.

Sheppard, Dale Planck, Ward and Bobby Varin won the eight-lap heat races for the small-block modifieds while Billy Decker and Mike Lles topped the eight-lap consolation races.

Hearn led the 49-car small-block modified field in time trials Thursday evening with a lap of 16.206 seconds around the four-tenths-mile oval.

The Ferris 100 presented by DynoMax Weekend continues Saturday night highlighted by a 100-lap feature for the big-block modifieds of the Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series. Adult tickets are $23 with children 12 and under admitted for just $5. Hot laps start at 6:40 p.m. with opening ceremonies at 7:20 p.m.
