Like Jack Roush, Speedway Children's Charities is always trying to pilot change for the better. Retired U.S. Air Force Major General Tom Sadler, executive director of Speedway Children's Charities, felt that honoring Roush was a natural. "Children are much like competitive teams; they need our constant attention if they are going to advance," Sadler said. "Together we will celebrate this ambition to constantly grow, always learn, and forever soar."
The evening will begin with a reception and silent auction that will include vacation packages, sports memorabilia, jewelry and many other items. Lifestyle connoisseur Robin Leach will serve as master of ceremonies and it is expected that many of Roush's drivers, both current and former, will attend. Several guests are expected to participate in the evening's special production including Jeff Hammond and H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler. Following a mini-live auction led by Larry Hedrick, guests will be entertained by The Voltage Brothers, a local variety band.
The gala affair is annually Charlotte's largest black-tie benefit as well as one of the most successful fundraisers for the Charlotte Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities. Founded by Speedway Motorsports Chairman O. Bruton Smith, Speedway Children's Charities provides funds to organizations that meet the direct needs of children with medical, educational or social challenges. Through donations, sponsorships and fund-raising events such as the May 27 ball, the organization distributes funds through a grant process to qualified non-profit organizations with a priority of improving the quality of life for children.
