Sunday, October 15, 2006
Dave Blaney won the Dollar General 300 NASCAR Busch Series race on a bizarre Friday the 13th evening at Charlotte Motor Speedway, while Kevin Harvick clinched the series championship.
Blaney outdueled Matt Kenseth in a side-by-side battle on the last lap of a green-white-checkered finish to grab his first win in any of NASCAR's three major touring series.
Despite an early tire problem and a lengthy pit stop that left him two laps down, Harvick captured his second Busch Series title thanks to the misfortune of Carl Edwards. Edwards dominated the race until a late tangle with Casey Mears took both drivers out at the front of the field, opening the door for Blaney and giving Harvick a chance to clinch the title by virture of padding his series points lead.
Blaney, Harvick, Kenseth, Mears and Edwards will clash again tonight when the green flag drops at 7:20 p.m. for the Bank of America 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race.
