Earl Pearson Jr., driving a car owned by 2000 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup champion Bobby Labonte, topped the 92-car field in time trials during the opening night of the second annual Circle K Colossal 100 Friday at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Time trials were followed by 10 qualifying heat races for the 360 OTC World of Outlaws late models with the top two finishers advancing to the $50,000-to-win, 100-lap finale that will conclude the two-day program Saturday night.

Among those claiming a top 20 starting spot in the 36-car main event were defending event winner Scott Bloomquist; local star Ricky Weeks; defending 360 OTC World of Outlaws champion and Richard Childress Racing development driver Tim McCreadie; and series points leader Shannon Babb.

The 12-lap heat races were won by Clint Smith, Weeks, Dan Schlieper, Chris Madden, Ben Adkins, Dennis "Rambo" Franklin, Jeremy Clements, Babb, Dale McDowell and Chuck Harper.

The remaining 16 feature starters will be determined through an additional series of qualifying races Saturday night, and the top 20 drivers will draw to determine their exact starting position.

There were no major incidents during the 120 laps of late model heat race action.

Pearson Jr. topped the stellar field in time trials with a lap of 15.078 seconds around the four-tenths-mile clay oval. Even though he failed to earn his way into the feature through his heat, Pearson Jr. is guaranteed to start at least 11th in the finale as a result of his third-place finish in the Jani-King Southern Showdown in October.

For recording the fastest qualifying lap, Pearson Jr. earned a RACEceiver/Simpson driving suit and $500 from RACEceiver.

Jimmy Mars was second fastest at 15.368 seconds and Schlieper stopped the timers at 15.405 seconds to earn the third spot. Rounding out the top five qualifiers were Shane Clanton and Brian Birkhofer.

Kenneth Deese, of Monroe, N.C., drove the No. 3 Big Show entry to victory in a wild 20-lap feature in the season opener for the CRASHCars.

Starting 12th in the 17-car field, Deese quickly sliced through the pack and took the lead for the first time on lap three. However, it was anything but an easy drive from there as Deese battled door-to-door and bumper-to-bumper with the No. 1 Chowderhead entry piloted by Mike Scarborough. The two exchanged the lead several times before Deese took command for the final time on a lap 17 restart and went on to claim his fifth career victory at The Dirt Track.

Scarborough settled for second with Walter Pecora third in Krashy the Klown.

The Circle K Colossal 100 continues Saturday night. Activities begin with a 90-minute driver autograph session starting at 4:30 p.m. In order to gain admission to the Circle K Pit Party, fans must present an event ticket along with an empty can of Full Throttle energy drink, which can be purchased at any area Circle K store. Once inside the pit party, each fan will receive a limited edition Circle K Colossal 100 event poster.

Opening ceremonies are set for 6:50 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at the gate or by calling 1-800-455-FANS.
