In a caution-filled opening night at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where tempers flared on the track, Sean Rayhall, Kaz Grala and Ben Rhodes claimed victory in the first of two nights of exciting racing action this week in the 2011 Summer Shootout Series.

Rayhall, of Austell, Ga., won the pole and led wire to wire in the Legend Car Pro feature race and never looked back as he claimed his fifth career Summer Shootout Series victory in a race that saw three yellow flags.

After a multi-car pile-up on the first lap caused a complete restart, Rayhall drove away from second place Justin Swilling, of Cohutta, Ga., leaving the rest of the field to battle for a top-five spot. The race was shortened by one lap after Evan Swilling, Chase Cantania, Trey Eidson and Brenton Irving tangled in the fourth turn to bring out the checkered and caution flags, giving Rayhall the win.

Justin Swilling took home second place with Charlotte, N.C. native, Zac Kittle, crossing the stripe in third.

In the Bandolero Outlaws feature, Westborough, Mass. native, Grala, fought a hard battle from the pole position to score his first win in the division.

John Holleman, of Winston Salem, N.C., jumped to an early lead but was nudged into second place by Grala on Lap 2. Grala was then able to stretch his lead to three car lengths as a spin in Turn 2 brought out the first caution of the night. After race officials reset the field, Holleman took advantage of the restart to steal second position from Walker Yates, of Clemmons, N.C.

By halfway, the top five, led by Grala, began to break away. Yates and Grala split the lapped traffic as they raced neck and neck for the lead with two laps to go.

Grala took possession of the lead while Yates and Holleman brought the fans to their feet with their door-to-door second- and third-place finishes.

Rhodes, of Louisville, Ky., started the Legend Car Young Lion feature event from the pole position and went unchallenged in the 10-lap, caution-shortened race, en route to his first career Summer Shootout Series victory.

The caution flag flew on Lap 2 when front runners Kason Plott of Marietta, Ga., and Mason Massey of Douglasville, Ga., made contact fighting for the second position. Massey was able to regain the second spot while Plott was charged with the caution and sent to the tail of the field.

After taking the white flag on Lap 9, chaos ensued as several of the leaders made contact, causing a multi-car pile up in Turn 2. The red flag was shown and the race was complete, leaving many drivers with wrecked racecars and heated emotions.

T.J. Michael of Plano, Texas, came home in second place and Massey crossed the line in third.

Other feature winners included Kyle Hall in the Legend Car Semi-Pro division; Kevin Foisy in the Legend Car Masters division; Carson Ferguson in the Bandolero Bandits division; and Hunter Stewart in the Bandolero Beginner Bandits division.
