Charlotte Media to do Battle in the School Bus Slobberknocker of the Year Tuesday Night at the Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series
Charlotte-area media are set to go toe-to-toe in 13-ton machines when the Media Mayhem school bus race returns for Round Three of the Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series presented by Dave & Buster’s on Tuesday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
In 2011, WBTV meteorologist Al Conklin claimed the victory in the third annual Media Mayhem school bus race. Conklin held off a hard-charging Matthew East from News 14 and Chuck "DZL" Thompson, with 106.5 FM The End, for the win.
This year, Conklin will be back, hoping to defend his title, and so will East, who is looking to improve upon his second place finish from last year. Other participants will include meteorologists Brad Panovich with WCNC and Keith Monday with WSOC-TV; Derek James, Fox News Rising co-host and staff meteorologist; radio DJs Drex, from the Drex and Maney Show on Kiss 95.1 FM, and Kris Stevens, from 96.9 FM The Kat; and Lug Nut, the world’s fastest mascot.
“School may be out for summer, but I plan to leave these tardy guys waiting at the bus stop as I defend my crown,” said Conklin.
In addition to school bus racing, the night will also include a full slate of Legend Car and Bandolero racing with some of the best drivers in the country in their final tune-up before the Legends Big Money 100.
The first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a Frisbee courtesy of title sponsor, Jack in the Box. Plus, kids can have fun in the POWERADE Play Zone, featuring bounce houses, interactive games, face painting and more.
Additionally, Round Three sponsor Dave & Buster’s will have a bowling challenge with two lucky fans in attendance Tuesday night. The two participants will bowl against each other in front of the crowd and the winner will receive two free hours of bowling, plus free shoe rental for up to four people at Dave & Buster’s.
Tickets for the Summer Shootout Series are $7 for adults and are available in advance at the speedway ticket office or at Gates 4 and 5 the night of the event. Kids 13 and under get in free. Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with preliminary action starting at 5:10 p.m. Opening ceremonies are at 6:45 p.m. and feature races are scheduled to conclude by approximately 10 p.m.
The third annual Legends Big Money 100, the biggest grassroots racing event in the country, will return to Charlotte Motor Speedway, July 2-3. Competitor registration for the event is still open online at www.charlottemotorspeedway.com. The event will include a fireworks extravaganza at the conclusion of the Legends Big Money 100 feature race on July 3.
