Deep-Fried Cupcakes Created for Food Lion AutoFair, May Races
Continuing the tradition of bringing unique and delicious fair foods to the fans, Charlotte Motor Speedway and Levy Restaurants will offer fans the ultimate dessert experience with deep-fried cupcakes at the Food Lion AutoFair April 19-22, the Sprint All-Star Race May 19 and the Coca-Cola 600 May 27.
“Every year we try to do a new, fried, fun fair food that kids of all ages will enjoy,” said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway. “Deep-fried cupcakes are a never-been-done-before twist on a childhood favorite. Fans will love this new cupcake creation during our Spring Season of Speed.”
Each tasty treat consists of three mini-cupcakes, dipped in a tempura batter and fried at 375 degrees, until a light, golden brown crust forms. The trio of sweets -- which consists of one vanilla cupcake with strawberry icing, one chocolate cupcake with cookies and cream icing and one vanilla cupcake with confetti icing -- is served on a stick, drizzled with chocolate sauce and topped with a dusting of powdered sugar, all for just $4.
“They’re wonderful,” said Shawn McFalls, executive sous chef with Levy Restaurants, the official food service provider of Charlotte Motor Speedway. “When you take a bite, the icing is really melted and soft. It’s like a yummy warm filling.”
Sure to satisfy any fan’s sweet tooth, the deep-fried cupcake is the latest in a line of creative culinary offerings from Charlotte Motor Speedway. Past delicacies have included deep-fried butter, deep-fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and deep-fried peaches. In addition to the cupcakes, Levy Restaurants will bring back the funnel bacakonator, a large funnel cake covered in chocolate and strawberry sauces, then topped with bacon. Both items will be available at select State Fair concession stands during the Spring Season of Speed events.
