Faster Pastor School Bus Races, Great Giveaways Mark Opening Week of Summer Shootout
The 18th annual Summer Shootout Series kicks-off Monday, June 13, at Charlotte Motor Speedway with two exciting nights of Legend Car and Bandolero racing. Each night will feature special giveaways for kids and local pastors will battle it out on the frontstretch quarter-mile in a school bus sloberknocker on Tuesday night.
In the first of four school bus races of the 2011 Summer Shootout Series, fans can support their local pastors as they try their hand behind the wheel of the monstrous machines, measuring 30 feet long, 112 inches tall and tipping the scales at nearly 13 tons each.
Those expected to compete include Doug Falls and Kevin Burrell from StoneBridge Community Church in Charlotte, N.C.; Buddy Compton from Sons of Thunder Ministries in Monroe, N.C.; as well as Motor Racing Outreach's Billy Mauldin, of Concord, N.C. No school bus race would be complete without Lug Nut, the world’s fastest mascot, competing as well.
"This is an incredible opportunity to be a part of what has become an exciting night of racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway," said Mauldin, president and CEO of Motor Racing Outreach. “I’m thankful the track recognizes the role ministries play in local communities and for allowing us to be part of their Summer Shootout event. I’m coming to win!”
Monday night, the first 1,000 kids to enter the gate will receive a special 1:64 scale NASCAR diecast car and Tuesday the first 1,000 kids will receive tickets to a Charlotte Knights game. During each Summer Shootout Series race, children can have plenty of fun at the Powerade Play Zone featuring bounce houses, face painting and interactive games at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Fan Van.
The seven-week, 10-race Summer Shootout Series runs each Tuesday night through July 26, with select Monday night races on June 13, July 4 and July 25. Tickets are just $7 for adults and $3 for children 6 to 12 and are available in advance at the speedway ticket office and at Gates 4 and 5 the night of the event. Children under 6 are admitted free.
Spectator gates open at 4:30 p.m. with preliminary action starting at 5 p.m. Feature races are scheduled to conclude by approximately 9:30 p.m. Parking is free.
